Application

SPIS will consider applications from all UC San Diego freshmen who are admitted to one of the following majors:
  • Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Bioinformatics majors in the CSE Department
  • Computer Engineering majors in the ECE Department
  • Math/CS majors in the Mathematics Department
  • Data Science majors

In addition, we will consider applications from a small of number of other freshmen who would like to explore computer science and engineering.

Application

All students are required to complete the SPIS application. Applications will open on and close on . Only a limited number of students will be admitted to SPIS. Students who will benefit most from the program will be given preference.

Fee

Students are required to pay a total fee of $ to cover instructional expenses.

Financial Aid

A number of scholarships (based on financial hardship) are available to partially cover the cost of the $ fee.

International students will need to obtain an I-20 (to apply for the F-1 visa) or DS-2019 (to apply for the J-1 visa) to attend SPIS. Once you get the admission notice from SPIS, submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) if you haven't done so already. Wait 48 hours after submitting your SIR to login to the iPortal to request your I-20 or DS-2019. You may experience login issues if you do not wait 48 hours. If you have already been issued an I-20 and will need a new one with an earlier start date to attend the SPIS program, email iportal@ucsd.edu with "EARLY START DATE REQUEST - SPIS PROGRAM" in the subject line. Include your full name, PID and request for the early start date due to admission to the SPIS program in the email. You will need to create a new eship global order number if your I-20/DS-2019 needs to be resent.

Registration

Welcome you to complete the SPIS registration! In this section, you will find the forms and detailed instructions for completing your enrollment for SPIS once you have been admitted to the program.

Confirm Acceptance

Participation in SPIS is by admission only. If you received an admission offer to participate in SPIS, please confirm your acceptance by sending an email to Professor at by .

Fee Payment

You also need to send a non-refundable check for $ towards the SPIS fee (payable to the "University of California Regents") to the following mailing address to arrive on or before . Please reduce the fee amount by the amount of your scholarship award.

Mandatory Forms

You need to complete the following forms, sign them, and mail them to the following address to participate in SPIS.

Evaluation Consent: Please complete and sign the evaluation form if you agree to participate in the pre and post evaluation of SPIS. These evaluations will be used to make improvements to the program in the future.

Media Release Waiver: Please complete and sign the Media Release Waiver. The waiver authorizes SPIS with the right to use any photos or videos of your student that may be taken during the course of the program for future marketing or public relations use.

Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement: Please read the agreement carefully before signing. By signing this waiver you agree to all the terms in the agreement as it pertains to SPIS. All students participating in SPIS must return the completed agreement in order to participate in the program.

Insurance and Immunization Attestation: Please read the agreement carefully before signing. By signing this document you are attesting that you are or will be covered by an active medical insurance policy for the duration of your participation and acknowledge that medical expenses incurred during your participation are your responsibility to resolve. All students participating in SPIS must return the completed agreement in order to participate in the program.
